Have a Picnic
Announce to your child "we're
having a picnic" and explain that
you'll need his help. Let your child
help you prepare sandwiches,
pack juice boxes into the picnic
basket, find a picnic blanket, and
choose a few fun items such as a
teddy bear friend to join you, a
book to read, or a bottle of bubbles
to blow. Head for the nicest park in
your area (or simply go outside
your home) and enjoy!

Indoor Picnic
Have a picnic in the living room or
any other room in the house with
your child. Set up everything just
as you where going to the park but
say indoors instead. Have fun!

Ants
Talk to your toddler about ants and
how they're attracted to food at a
picnic.

Sorting Game
Put several items in a picnic
basket. Have some that belong at
a picnic (plastic forks, knives,
napkins, paper plates, plastic
cups, blankets, etc.) and some
that don't (shoes, soap, etc.) .
Have your child sort which items
are picnic items and which are not.

Peanut Butter and Jelly bag
Put peanut butter and jelly in a
Ziploc bag and let your child
smush and manipulate it with his
hands.

Food Collage
Help your child choose and cut out
picnics of various foods  and
drinks from a magazine (or a
grocery sales ad) that he would
like to take on a picnic. Glue the
foods to a paper plate.

Picnic Basket
Find a simple woven or plastic
basket with a handle and allow
your child to decorate her own
picnic basket with ribbons, paints,
and foam stickers.

Picnic in the Park
(Tune: "She'll Be Coming Round the
Mountain")
Yes, we'll all go on a picnic in the park.
Yes, we'll all go on a picnic in the park.
Bring some lunch and bring a ball.
There will be such fun for all!
Yes, we'll all go on a picnic in the park.

Ants at a Picnic
Ants, Ants everywhere
Ants on my apple,
Ants on my pear.
Ants at a picnic
Are not so great.
I see five crawling
On my plate!

The Picnic Basket
(Tune: "Pop! Goes the Weasel")
Put salad, soda, and sandwiches in,
Forks and plates and cups.
Our picnic basket is filled to the top.
But I can't pick it up!

I'll eat some salad and sandwiches,
too,
I'll drink some soda pop.
Now my basket's not so full,
And I can pick it up!

Ants at the Picnic
(Tune: "Skip to My Lou")
Ants at the picnic, what'll I do?
Ants at the picnic, what'll I do?
Ants at the picnic, what'll I do?
Guess I will eat real quickly!

Picnic Packing
(Tune: "A Tisket, A Tasket")
A-tisket, A-tasket,
Let's pack a picnic basket.
We'll fill it up with food to munch
And then we’ll have a great lunch!

Picnic with your Child

Picnics are wonderful
opportunities for families to
spend time together and, of
course, eat great food.
Organize a real picnic with your
family and friends. See if
adults might be willing to
contribute a dish for everyone
to enjoy. With adult help, your
toddler can contribute simple
snacks, too. At the picnic,
encourage everyone to talk
about the food they brought.
