Boat Talk
Talk to your child about boats.
Boats can be used for a fun trip
down the water, or to get from one
place to another for any reason.
Boats are made to float in (and
mostly on top of) the water. Show
your toddler pictures of different
kinds of boats or take a trip to the
local lake and point out some
boats, describing their colors, type
(sailboat, rowboat, canoe, etc.)
and listening for any sounds they
make.

Do this Halves Boat Craft,
compliments of DLTK Kids.

Paper Plate Sailboat
Place a small amount of play
dough in the center of a
wax-coated paper plate. Put a craft
stick (or popsicle stick)  into the
lump of dough and attach a
construction paper sail (triangle) to
the craft stick. Place the sailboat in
water (use a water table or bath
tub) and encourage your child to
experiment with different ways to
make the sailboat move (make
waves with hand, blow on the sail,
etc.)

Sea Art
Use a sheet of blue construction
paper to represent water. Help
your child make waves with
crayons (squiggly lines), then
make sail boats from triangles
and rectangles. Add the following
rhyme to the picture, and recite it
aloud:

LITTLE BOAT
Look in the
Toy box.
find a
Little boat.
Put it
In the water
And watch
It float.

Overboard
Sit in the circle with your child and
a few of his stuffed animals or
dolls. Pretend you are sitting
inside a boat. Sing "Row, row, row
your boat". Then, the captain (you)
shout out your child's name and
say, "Kelly, overboard!" Your child
jumps into the middle of the circle
and pretends to swim. You will
pretend to throw a line out to him
and begin pulling. As you pull, say
"1, 2, 3, 4, 5 she/he's alive!"
Continue playing, making sure all
the "pretend friends" in the circle
gets a chance to jump (or be
thrown!) overboard.

Float Around In Canoes
(Tune: "Ring Around the Rosey")
Float around in canoes,
(move in circle clockwise)
We are wearing no shoes.
(continue moving clockwise)
Upstream.
(move counter clockwise)
Downstream.
(move clockwise)
We all splish SPLASH!
(Drop hands and fall to ground)

Waves on the Sea
(Tune: Wheels on the Bus)
The waves on the sea go up and down,
up and down, up and down,
The waves on the sea go up and down
All day long.

Continue with:
2. The sharks in the sea go snap snap
snap..
3. The fish in the sea go swish swish
swish..
4. The boats in the sea go toot toot
toot...

Boats Out In The Sea
(Tune: "The Farmer In The Dell")
Boats out in the sea.
Boats out in the sea.
Float up and down and all around.
Boats out in sea.

Have You Ever Seen A Sailboat
(Tune: "Did You Ever See A Lassie?")
Have you ever seen a sailboat,
A sailboat, a sailboat?
Have you ever seen a sailboat
Waving its sail?
Wave this way and that way,
Wave that way and this way.
Have you ever seen a sailboat
Waving its sail?

Rowing
(Tune: "Row, Row, Row Your Boat")
Waves, waves, back and forth,
Rock the boat all day.
(move hands like waves)
We row and row so we can go
Somewhere far away
(pretend to row boat).

Sailboat, Sailboat
(Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star")
Sailboat sailboat in the sea
won't you come and carry me
through the ocean, through the bay
to any place that's far away
Sailboat, sailboat in the sea
won't you come and carry me

COUNTING

Don't forget to count with your
child everyday. Everything can
be counted - stairs climbed,
candy pieces, socks, sneezes,
you name it! Even if your child
has already mastered
counting to 10 or 20, never
stop practicing.
