The First Step to Starting Your Own Business

Not sure you have what it takes to be a “momtrepreneur”? Well, sure you do! Usually, all it
amounts to is having a bit of courage, so make a vow this month to step out of your comfort
zone and engage yourself in a new venture. Having your own business doesn’t mean you
have to be the next Martha Stewart or invest tons of time and resources in an effort to make
yourself rich. No, your business can be successful even if it’s small, part time, and only profits
you enough to cover the costs of 1-2 household bills each month.

The first step is deciding exactly what it is you want to do. Easy, just use your talents (and we
all have them)! For example, if you’re good with children, you might try a nanny service, a home
daycare, tutoring, teaching music, or coaching. Love makeup and talking to people – then try
being an independent makeup consultant or a sales rep. If you’re creative, consider making
crafts, jewelry, or scrapbooking. For fitness buffs, being a personal trainer could be your thing.
If you have a knack for numbers and a good sense of business, perhaps bookkeeping or being
a virtual assistant is just the right endeavor for you!

Once you have a list of four or five things you enjoy doing AND you can do relatively well, try
narrowing the list down to one item. Then spend a few days researching online to see current
trends, market potential, and other mothers who have successfully accomplished
entrepreneurship in the same area.

Once you have an idea you want to run with, there is plenty of help to get started. Try one of
